[English review] The Lady of Percussion
An Afro-Cuban woman who defies the rules of her social condition and her condition as a woman to impose herself in the music world, that's a good synopsis for a film, isn't it? In fact, it's a 2014 documentary about Deborah del Carmen Méndez. Co-directed by Rakel Aguirre, Alina O’Donell and Karla Díaz Montalba, this ten-minute short film traces the journey of this pioneer in the world of percussions. The 60-year-old musician explains her contribution to the music of Cuba, a contribution for which she is aware of not receiving the recognition she deserves.
While hoping there will be a biopic to honor her legacy in this lifetime, you can discover more about her thanks to this short film you can stream for free on Vimeo.
